A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

What thermal imaging actually finds.

Most electrical failures in industrial installations start as heat. A loose connection running 20°C above its neighbours. A breaker drawing slightly more than its rated current. A failing capacitor warming up internally. Each one is undetectable to the naked eye, invisible to standard testing, and entirely obvious on a thermal image.

A thermal imaging survey is a non-intrusive way of finding these failures-in-waiting. We open every distribution board, MCC and machine panel under live conditions, photograph each compartment with a calibrated thermal camera, and report the findings against industry temperature thresholds.

The report shows exactly what we found, where, and what to do about it. Each hotspot is photographed twice – once thermally, once in visible light – so the rectification team knows exactly which connection to tighten, which breaker to replace, or which component to investigate further.

We do thermal imaging as both a standalone service and as part of planned maintenance contracts. For sites without a maintenance contract, an annual or six-monthly thermal imaging survey is one of the highest-value inspections available. It catches the failures other inspection methods miss.

Calibrated thermal imaging camera.

FLIR or Testo industrial-grade thermal camera with documented calibration. Resolution and sensitivity suitable for electrical work.

All distribution and panel inspection.

Every accessible distribution board, sub-board, MCC, machine panel and isolator surveyed under live, loaded conditions.

Annotated report with images.

Each hotspot documented with a thermal image, a visible-light photograph, the measured temperature, the ambient temperature, and the recommendation.

Severity classification.

Findings classified per industry standard – Critical (immediate action), Serious (action within days), Moderate (action within weeks), Monitor (re-check at next survey).

Remedial quote for findings.

Where findings need rectification we provide a separate remedial quote, prioritised by severity, with photographs cross-referenced to the survey report.

Comparison to previous surveys.

For repeat clients, results are compared to previous surveys to identify deteriorating trends – components that aren’t yet at threshold but are heading that way.

Questions we get a lot.

Annual minimum for most industrial sites. Six-monthly for high-criticality operations or sites with previous deteriorating findings. After any significant load change or installation work.

No – surveys are non-intrusive and carried out under live conditions. Production continues normally during the survey.

Loose connections account for around half of all findings. Imbalanced phases, overloaded conductors and failing breakers make up most of the rest. Major component failures are rarer but the most critical.

Ideally a site contact should be available for access to panels and to discuss findings. But it’s not a hands-on process for you – the survey is carried out by our engineer.

Most surveys are scheduled within a week of enquiry. Survey itself takes half a day to a full day depending on site size. Report follows within forty-eight hours.

No – it’s complementary. An EICR is a full electrical installation inspection. Thermal imaging catches dynamic load-related issues that an EICR doesn’t see.
