Why reactive maintenance costs more.

Every industrial electrical failure that takes down a production line has, in retrospect, been signalling its arrival for months. A loose connection heating up. A motor drawing slightly more current than it should. A failed RCD that nobody noticed because the test button hadn’t been pressed in two years. The failure isn’t sudden – it’s just unnoticed.

Planned maintenance is the mechanism for catching those signals before they become incidents. A scheduled programme of EICRs, thermal imaging, PAT testing and visual inspection picks up the early warning signs that reactive maintenance – by definition – misses entirely.

Our planned maintenance contracts are simple. An annual EICR covering all fixed installation. A six-monthly thermal imaging survey of all distribution boards, motor control centres and machine panels. PAT testing on the schedule your insurance and risk assessment requires. Emergency lighting full-discharge testing where applicable. And 24-hour breakdown response, included, for any client on a maintenance contract.

The economics are straightforward. The annual cost of a planned maintenance contract is almost always less than the cost of one significant unplanned outage. The pitch isn’t ‘maintenance is cheaper than reaction’ – it’s ‘maintenance is cheaper than reaction plus you don’t get the reaction in the first place’.

Annual EICR of all fixed installation.

Full inspection and testing per BS 7671 of all fixed wiring, distribution and protection. Coded observations with recommendations and rectification quotes.

Six-monthly thermal imaging surveys.

Non-contact thermal imaging of all distribution boards, machine panels and MCCs. Hotspots identified before they fail. Report with annotated images.

PAT testing on agreed schedule.

Portable appliance testing to your insurance and risk assessment requirement. Asset register maintained, faults rectified.

Emergency lighting full-discharge tests.

Emergency lighting full-discharge tests. Annual three-hour discharge tests on every emergency luminaire. BS 5266 certification. Failed fittings replaced same-visit where stock allows.

24-hour breakdown response.

Included for contract clients. Engineer on site within four hours of a breakdown call, 24/7. No call-out fees during contract period.

Quarterly site review meetings.

Quarterly review with you to discuss the previous quarter’s findings, plan the next quarter’s work, and prioritise any rectifications.

Depends on site size and frequency. Most small-to-medium industrial sites are £3,500-£7,500/year. We quote each contract individually after a survey. Almost always cheaper than the cost of one significant unplanned outage.

Engineer on site within four hours of your call, 24/7, 365 days a year. No call-out fee. Parts and labour for the actual breakdown are charged separately at contract rates.

Yes – one-off thermal imaging surveys are quoted separately. But contract clients get them as standard, six-monthly, included in the annual contract fee.

Yes – many clients have multiple properties under one contract. We schedule visits to cluster work geographically and report against a portfolio view.

We flag it immediately, give you a remedial quote within a week, and prioritise the rectification work. For contract clients we don’t charge a separate quote fee.

Emergency lighting is included as standard. General lighting maintenance is usually a separate maintenance schedule, included in some contracts but quoted separately for others.
