A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Why machine supplies need doing right.

new machine arrives on site. The production manager wants it running by Monday. The electrician throws a sub-main off the nearest distribution board, hangs a local isolator, and walks away. Six months later the machine is tripping intermittently, the connection has loosened from thermal cycling, and nobody can explain why.

Industrial machine supplies fail in predictable ways. Undersized cables run hot. Cheap isolators wear out. Containment held up with cable ties drops out of the ceiling void in the first heatwave. The supply that worked on day one isn’t the supply that’s still working in year three.

We do industrial machine supplies the way machinery manuals say they should be done – cables sized for full load current plus an allowance, isolators rated correctly with appropriate breaking capacity, proper galvanised tray or trunking on the cable run, emergency stops where the risk assessment requires them.

We also do this around your shifts. New machine power supplies usually mean a few hours of localised downtime to make the final connection. We schedule that downtime to fit your operations – most installs are made live during a planned changeover or out-of-hours window.

Load assessment and cable sizing.

Calculation based on machine nameplate data, run-time and ambient. Cables sized with appropriate de-rating factors and headroom.

Rated isolators and protection.

Local isolators rated to the load with appropriate breaking capacity. RCBO protection where required. Surge protection on high-value machinery.

Galvanised containment, not cable ties.

Cable tray or trunking on every run that’s visible or accessible. Stainless screws on outdoor mountings. The detail that determines whether the install still looks like a proper job in five years.

Emergency stops and safety integration.

Where machinery requires emergency stop integration we install the local E-stops and wire the safety circuits. Done to your risk assessor’s spec.

Out-of-hours final connections.

The final make-live is scheduled around your shifts. Most installs are connected during planned changeover, weekend windows or short controlled downtime – never in the middle of a production run.

Testing and minor works certification.

Every supply tested for insulation resistance, polarity, loop impedance and RCD operation. Minor works certificate issued before we leave site.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions we get a lot.

A typical single machine supply with a moderate cable run is two days – one for cable and containment install, one for final connection and testing. Larger machines or longer runs scale up from there.

Cable runs and containment can almost always go in while the line is running. Final connection requires a short isolation window – usually a couple of hours, scheduled around your operations.

If the new machine takes the building’s total load above existing supply capacity we’ll lodge the DNO application and handle the liaison. DNO lead times are typically 4-8 weeks.

Yes – where the machine safety case requires interlocked isolators we install those and wire the safety circuit per your risk assessment.

We size cables based on full load current per BS 7671, with appropriate de-rating factors for ambient temperature, run length, grouping and method of installation. Usually one cable size up from absolute minimum, for thermal headroom.

Yes – most production machinery is three-phase. We do single-phase and three-phase machine supplies as standard. See our separate page on 3-phase installations for new supply work.
