Why EV charging is harder than it looks.

Most commercial EV charging installs go wrong in the planning stage, not the install stage. A 7kW charger draws thirty amps continuously when in use. A multi-bay array of four 22kW chargers can draw nearly four hundred amps. That’s a serious load on a building’s incoming supply – and a serious problem if the supply isn’t sized for it.

We see plenty of jobs where someone’s fitted a bank of chargers to a building that can’t actually run them all at once. The result is breakers tripping, chargers throttling, or worse – a smart load-management system shutting half the array down at peak demand because the supply was always going to fall short.

A proper EV charging install starts with a load assessment of the existing building. Then a sizing exercise – how many chargers, what speed, what utilisation pattern. Then a DNO check if the building’s supply needs upgrading. Then the install. Then commissioning, testing and certification.

We work to OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) and BS 7671 standards. Where the install qualifies for the OZEV Workplace Charging Scheme grant we’ll handle the paperwork – the grant covers up to £350 per socket, up to forty sockets per applicant.

Where you’re installing more chargers than the supply could simultaneously run, we install load-balancing controls so the array is always within capacity.

Containment and labelling.

Galvanised tray and trunking on outdoor runs, stainless screws on outdoor mountings. The detail that decides whether the install still looks tidy in five years.

HOLIDAY PARK EV CHARGING

EV charging is becoming increasingly important for holiday parks, caravan sites and lodges. Installing chargers allows guests to arrive, plug in and enjoy their stay without having to search for a public charging station nearby.

Chargers can be configured for private guest use or made available to the wider public. Payment-enabled systems allow you to set your own charging tariff, collect payments and monitor usage through an online management platform.

We assess your existing electrical supply, recommend the right number and speed of chargers, and install smart load management where required. This prevents the chargers from placing unnecessary pressure on the site’s electrical supply during busy periods.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions we get a lot.

Depends on supply size and existing demand. A typical 100A three-phase commercial supply can usually run 4-6 x 7kW chargers if existing demand is moderate. We do a load assessment as part of every quote.

7kW is single-phase. 22kW is three-phase and draws three times the current. Most cars charge optimally at 7kW and don’t benefit from faster – but fleet vehicles with three-phase capability do.

A single 7kW workplace charger with the supply already in place is a one-day install. Multi-bay arrays take 2-4 days. Supply uplifts add 4-8 weeks of DNO lead time.

Most commercial premises with off-street parking qualify. The Workplace Charging Scheme grant is £350 per socket, up to 40 sockets. We handle the paperwork.

Yes – for sites where rapid charging is needed (customer-facing retail, transport hubs). DC fast chargers from 50kW up. These typically need a three-phase supply uplift.
