A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Why emergency lighting has to work.

Emergency lighting is one of those things you hope you never need – which is why it’s the system most likely to be quietly failing in the background. Batteries don’t last forever. Fittings get painted over. Test buttons stop being pressed. Five years go by and what was once a compliant emergency lighting system is now a string of dead luminaires no one’s noticed.

BS 5266 – the standard for emergency lighting – requires monthly function tests and annual full-discharge tests on every emergency luminaire. The annual test takes three hours of battery operation to be valid. Most commercial premises don’t do this. They mean to. It never gets done.

Tested, certified, working when it matters. The emergency lighting done right is the emergency lighting that doesn’t come back as a problem in two years.

We install, test and maintain emergency lighting systems under one contract. Installation to current standards, monthly tests recorded centrally, annual full-discharge tests certified, and any failures rectified inside the same visit. The fittings that don’t pass get replaced – we keep stock for the common types so it’s a same-day fix.

Where you’re starting from scratch we’ll design the system to BS 5266, install it, commission it and certify it. Where you’ve inherited an existing system we’ll inspect it, test it, and either certify what’s there or rectify what isn’t.

Routes, signage, escape lighting, anti-panic and standby lighting all designed per the current standard. Lux levels calculated and documented.

Self-test fittings as standard.

Modern self-test emergency luminaires that flag failures automatically. Cuts out the monthly manual-test labour entirely on larger sites.

Annual full-discharge testing.

Three-hour discharge tests on every emergency luminaire annually, properly recorded and certified. The test that actually proves the system works.

Same-visit remedial replacement.

Failed luminaires replaced on the same visit where stock matches. We hold the common bulkhead and exit-sign types.

Test log book and certification.

Monthly and annual test records logged centrally. Certificates issued for insurance and fire risk assessment purposes.

Fire risk assessment liaison.

Where you have a fire risk assessor we’ll liaise with them on the emergency lighting compliance section.

How a typical install actually works.

Site visit and existing system check.

We walk the building, identify every emergency luminaire, check the existing test records (or note their absence), and identify any obvious failures or missing coverage.

Within forty-eight hours we send a quote covering inspection, testing, certification and any remedial work needed. If the existing system needs design work we cost that separately.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions we get a lot.

Monthly function tests and annual full-discharge tests, per BS 5266. Function tests can be brief. Full-discharge tests require three hours of battery operation.

Self-test fittings test themselves automatically on a programmed schedule and flag failures via an LED indicator. Manual-test fittings require someone to physically operate a test switch. Self-test cuts out the monthly visit labour.

Typically four to five years for sealed nickel-cadmium batteries, longer for lithium where fitted. Most failures we see are batteries that have aged out rather than wider system faults.

Yes. We do annual full-discharge testing and certification on systems we didn’t install – assuming the system is BS 5266 compliant to start with. We’ll flag any compliance gaps separately.

We give you a remedial quote on the same day. Common-stock items we can replace on the visit; specialist fittings might need ordering in, usually within a fortnight.
